CRICKET- A Gentleman's Game

Captains of all the Teams

As we all know what is cricket, as ofcourse it is a game and everyone reading this must have played cricket in his or her life atleast once. So, just to make it more interesting I will start by telling you about cricket. Cricket is a game played with a bat and a ball on a large ground/field. It is being played between two teams of 11 players in each team. The main focus in the game is to score more and more runs for the team and to defeat them by making them out or dismiss the opponent batsman when in the field.

Cricket - A Gentleman's Game: As we know that Cricket is a gentlemans game. it is said gentleman's game because this game is being played in a gentlemanly manner. As there is no sledging, cheating, bodyline bowling, temper tantrums or excessive appealing. In a match if any batsman knew that he was out, he should have to walk away even if the umpire decided otherwise.

As we know that cricket was once considered as Gentleman's game, but now it is no longer the same. it had been seen many a times that players are sledging to their opponent, arguing with the umpair etc. But still we can see many gentleman's spirit in the matches. So, we still call cricket as a gentleman's game. The players have to abide by the Spirit of the game, which should guide the players conduct. Some of the qualities that make cricket a gentleman's game are: respect for your umpires, opponents, spectators, and the game, fair and honest play.

Origin of Cricket: Cricket was created during Saxon or Norman times by the childrens living in the Weald, an area of dense woodlands and clearing in south-east England that lies across Kent and Sussex. In Englandgentlemen were rich people who only used to bat. The poor people were allowed to bowl and field. As we know that cricket was invented in England but we Indians love this game the most. And we can say that each and every Indian have a special connection with this game tough it is the National game of England but still we love this game more than them.

Some of the basic rules to make a batsman out:

Measurements and field positions
  • Hitting the wicket with the bal when bowling ( bowled out ).
  • Catching a batsman's shot on the full.
  • Hitting the batsman's leg in front of the wicket ( LBW ).
  • Hitting the wickets before the batsman can run to the other end of the pitch.

Different formats in Cricket:

  • Test Cricket: Test Cricket is the longest hours of cricket as it runs for five days. All the players required to wear white t-shirts and white trousers. The field restrictions are quite different compared to limited over matches. A red coloured cricket ball is used in this format. And everyday one team can bowl upto 90 overs. Bowling team has to take all the wickets of the opponent and then get chances of batting or if the batting team wants to declare after scoring a good total then also opponents gets chances of batting and if the opponent beat the score and goes on batting till the last day of the match then they are the winner. And if the second team gets all out during the chase of second innings, then the first team will be declared as winner, else the match is drawn between both teams.

  • One-Day International Cricket: One day international cricket (ODI) is a limited over format of Cricket. It was introduced in 1980s. And at that time 60 overs were bowled from one side. The dress code was also same as that of test cricket. But now this formats also changes drastically in rules and now only 50 overs were bowled from one side and now there are coloured uniform also. And the red ball was replaced with white ball. If Team A is batting first then they can only bat for 50 overs after that Team B will chase the score of Team A and if Team B succeded in chasing the score then they will be the winner but if they can't chase the score then Team A will be the winner.
